12.17.18. Santa Claus Rally: Boom or Bust?

This week on Middle Theory, we look at the idea of the “Santa Claus Rally,” and dire economic forecasts for the future of the American economy.

As we kick things off, we look at the relevance historical studies has to our understanding of the human condition. Micah begins with a few observations in relation to the book Going to the Sources: A Guide to Historical Research and Writing, and the way that historical research is conducted, before comparing this to themes like postmodernism, the idea of being “docile” in modern society, and a number of other ideas.

We then shift our attention to a horrific and tasteless bomb threat made to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut, and the history of conspiracy thought–largely promoted by the likes of Alex Jones–and how this has fueled nonsensical conspiracy theories about the school, victims of the shooting that occurred six years ago, and the families of the survivors.

Then in the final portion of the show, we look at the recent dire economic forecasts for 2019, and whether a Federal Reserve rate-hike is a good idea (helpful hint: it’s not). Even Donald Trump seems to think this is a bad idea… so why would the Fed continue with the idea, as they are expected to do later this week? We look at all of this, and more, on this week’s edition of Middle Theory.
